Bears
Dear Parents
This year our Junior School teachers will continue to focus on teaching our students the processes of how to spell. Spelling words can be simply learnt, but can often be forgotten the week after. Our aim is to help children learn the skills of spelling effectively and use these skills within their daily writing. The program from which these words are formulated from is called ‘Jolly Phonics’ and this program is followed throughout all Junior Primary classes here at Trinity College. Jolly Phonics is a systematic, sequential, phonics program designed to teach children to read. They are then taken through the stages of blending and segmenting words to develop reading and writing skills.
This year, i will be testing the students weekly. Their words in the test MAY be the same as the list, or may be different words with the same BLEND. Later in the term and throughout the year, i will also give dictation to further assess their understanding of blends in their writing. This is to help recognise that sounds have been mastered not rote learning of list words. Therefore i also encourage you to talk about and include different words with the same blend at home in your homework time together. Spelling blends will progressively become more difficult throughout the year, and bonus words will be added, later in the term. Your child’s test book will be sent home each week to keep you informed and give you an opportunity to celebrate your child’s progress with them (scores will not be made). Test books need to be returned to school prior to the following week’s test.
Students will be moved around in spelling groups throughout the year, depending on how they are going in daily writing and spelling assessments.
While practising at home, please monitor and encourage the correct formation of letters. I have attached a copy of Modern Victorian Script to the back of this sheet for your reference.
Thank you in anticipation of your support,
Lyn Massey
